Political collage / installation

Why so Happy? is a political collage produced during the 2016 Austrian presidential elections. The work gathers and recomposes the smiles of political figures from different Austrian parties — SPÖ, ÖVP, FPÖ, Die Grünen, NEOS, and Piratenpartei — turning electoral optimism into an uneasy visual surface.
The installation explores the unequal politics of smiling: the distance between joy as an expression of lived experience and the staged smile as a calculated instrument of political image-making. In electoral culture, happiness is often performed before it is justified. The smiling face becomes a screen that can soften conflict, distract from policy, and transform public anxiety into visual confidence.
The work asks a simple question: why so happy? Why such choreographed exuberance in the face of social, economic, and cultural crisis? What happens when political appearance becomes more persuasive than responsibility, ethics, or common sense?
By isolating and repeating these smiles, the collage exposes happiness as a political technology: a gesture of reassurance, seduction, and control.
